Interest in Tamil Nadu’s native dog breeds is rising. Nearby Pets India explains why families are choosing Rajapalayam, Kanni and Kombai puppies.
For generations, Tamil Nadu’s native dogs guarded farms, hunted alongside their owners and lived as part of village families. The white Rajapalayam came from the town that gave it its name. The lean Kanni and Chippiparai came from the southern districts, and the sturdy Kombai from the Theni hills. For years, foreign breeds crowded them out of city homes. That is now changing.
Nearby Pets India, an online pet platform that delivers across more than 770 cities, says enquiries for Tamil Nadu’s native breeds have grown noticeably. Buyers are both families within the state and Tamil households living elsewhere in India.
“People are rediscovering that the best dog for Tamil Nadu may have been here all along,” says Soundarrajan Kannan, Founder & CEO of Nearby Pets India. “These breeds handle the heat and are naturally hardy. For many families they are also a link to the villages their grandparents came from.”
Sourced in the state, not shipped across India
Nearby Pets India sources its native puppies from inside Tamil Nadu. Rajapalayam puppies come from Thanjavur, where the company also runs a centre, and Kanni puppies come from Karur. Keeping these breeds close to their origin means shorter journeys for the puppies and breeding lines that stay true to the region.
The company is open about one point many buyers ask about. Native breeds such as the Rajapalayam, Kanni and Chippiparai are sold without Kennel Club of India papers. “We would rather tell a family that clearly than print a certificate that means nothing,” says Mohit Johari, Operations Head at Nearby Pets India. “What matters for these dogs is health, temperament and where they come from.”
Not a dog for every home
Native sighthounds and guardians are loyal and intelligent, but they are not lap dogs. The Chippiparai and Kanni need space to run. The Rajapalayam and Kombai are protective and need firm, early training and plenty of socialising. Nearby Pets India’s team explains this to every buyer before booking. A family in a small flat with little time for walks may be guided towards another breed.
How the booking works
Buyers reserve a puppy with a 25% advance and pay the remaining 75% only after meeting the puppy at delivery. Every puppy is vet-checked before dispatch and comes with a vet certificate. Puppies are at least 42 days old, have had their first vaccination and deworming, and are covered by a 7-day health guarantee.
Founded in 2023 in Kharar, Punjab, Nearby Pets India has served more than 1,000 customers. Its south Indian presence now includes centres in Thanjavur and Bengaluru.
“Every Rajapalayam or Kombai that goes to a good home helps keep the breed alive,” Kannan says. “That is a responsibility we take seriously.”
