Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport witnessed another day of flight delays on Sunday after the authorities decided to temporarily shut one runway for repairs.
According to reports, take-offs and landings of multiple flights were delayed because only one runway was available for use.
The average take-off delay was 40 minutes, and the average landing delay into Delhi was 38 minutes, according to an NDTV report.
Notably, the problem has been made worse by a shift in the wind direction.
However, the Hindustan Times stated that the civil aviation ministry is likely to halt the repair work and reopen the restricted runway after receiving strong criticism from travelers and internet users.
The maintenance work suspension is expected to take effect within the next 10 to 12 days, and it may resume after the third week of June, according to the HT article.
The way the ongoing crisis at the airport is being handled has drawn a lot of criticism on social media.
Vishnu Som, a well-known television journalist, took to social media to express his frustration. He claimed that because of the ongoing gridlock at the IGI Airport, he had been stranded at the Kolkata airport for around an hour and a half.
